Much like 'Microsoft', Cisco leads the way as one of the globe's most well known technology corporations. First founded in the mid 1980's, early on in the Silicon Valley IT revolution, 'Cisco' has become the global frontrunner in networking hardware, spending some Five Billion dollars a year on research and development. We basically wouldn't have the world wide web we've got today if it weren't for 'Cisco'. It is thought that over 70 percent of all world-wide network-hardware is represented by the 'Cisco' brand. For individuals focused on working in IT or 'Telecoms' hardware networking, 'Cisco' know-how is essential. The business has also grown commercially in newer technologies like VOIP, 'Security' and Wireless Data transfer.

Its not surprising then that 'Cisco' provides many accreditation routes, handling all its technologies & it's patents. Students are often advised to begin with exactly the same accreditation program, and then move into specialised elements as they progress. There are two examinations in the 'Cisco Certified Network Associate', or CCNA for short. These will prepare students of the right calibre with the necessary technical know-how to work with mid-level networks with 'routers' & data-switches.

For a very broad-based combined learning program you could add the MCSA or 'MCSE' from Microsoft to a CompTIA A+/Network+ and 'Cisco' CCNA track. Either way, a discussion of your career path & learning-style, with a seasoned IT professional or consultant, really should be at the head of your sheet of priorities, to guarantee that you will get off to the best possible start & stay away from any frustrating blunders.

'Cisco's' principal interest is in 'routers', 'controllers' & data switches. Without these devices, data wouldn't be able to flow around networks. Whilst an Operating System is required on a computer for it to communicate throughout a 'network ', the actual network hardware itself has it's own 'language' & standards that have to be set up, configured and maintained. All networks have got to efficiently & regularly need to increase, so ongoing maintenance means technicians must trouble shoot, re-configure & re-program on a regular basis. Cisco is in the centre of just about all present day workplace communications (corporate and government) as we see the international move towards full voice and data systems-integration.

The dilemma of exactly how to imitate a Cisco 'environment' to prepare for exams is often overlooked. Microsoft students who are preparing for their 'MCSE' for instance can 'network' a few old PC's at home to experiment with. This isn't the case with 'Cisco' - to formulate any sort of effective environment you would need complex routers & switches, plus a lot of PC's and other extremely costly technologies. Cisco-approved visualisers and network simulation programs are the one and only practicable answer. These deliver an on screen software-system, that will let you essentially construct large-scale 'virtual networks' & test them, all the way down to precise router & data switch versions, together with having the ability to 'interrogate' the packets of information as they navigate the network. A software program such as this is exactly what sets training-programs apart - it is not a good idea to consider any 'Cisco' package that doesn't encompass it.
